  ASB Card

ASB money pays for a major part of the music budget.  It is required that all band students have an ASB card.  They will also need an ASB card to get into school activities to perform with the band.  If funds are a problem, let the director know and a solution will be found.

  Attendance

This music ensemble is dependent upon all of its members, thus it is necessary that all members have a good attendance record. A missed rehearsal or performance cannot be made up. Students with excessive absent rates maybe asked to choose another elective, and their grade will reflect lost participation points.

  Band Letter

Redmond High School Band Members will be given the opportunity to earn a band letter for their participation in band activities outside of class.  Band letters will be awarded by a point system, with points awarded for musical activities in and out of school.  A from will be passes out at a later date for each student to record his or her points.  This record will be checked against attendance and other records.  Total number of points needed to earn a letter will be announced near the end of the year.

Minimum requirements for lettering include attending all school concerts and other performance of Wind Ensemble, Concert Band and / or Symphonic Band.

  Classroom Materials

You will be issued music throughout the year and a folder(s) to keep it in.  You are responsible for turning n music when required, in proper condition, and for paying for lost or damaged music.  You are also responsible for bringing this folder, and a pencil (for marking music) to all rehersals and performances.  Students are to have their instrument(s) at every rehersal and performance with all needed accessories (including extra reeds, valve oil, mutes, etc).

  Conduct

Inappropriate conduct during class and performances will not be tolerated.  Music ensembles are often out in the community performing, during which you are representing RHS, as well as your family and community.  Usage of tobacco, alcohol, or any non-prescription drug will cause immediate dismissal with a failing grade, and referral to an administrator for further action.

  Grading

Students will be held accountable for:  1)  Individual work and improvements  2)  Proper daily participation in rehearsal 3)  Group performance participation

A students grade will be determined by the following:

Individual performance evaluations graded on a scale of 0-5.  This will be 30% of grade.  These evaluations will be done both in a scheduled and random fashion during and after class; students may replay selected tests for an improved grade.

Rehearsal participation up to 5 points a day.  This will be 35% of grade.  Points will be deducted for poor participation, lack of materials or unexcused absences.

Performance participation is 35% of grade.  Concert performances are 10 points.  Pep or activity performance are 5 points.  Full day events are 15 points.

In order to receive an "A" in band you must attend all performances.  An unexcused absence from a performance may result in your being dropped from the band with a failing grade.  The only accepted excuses for missing a performance are illness or a family emergency.  It is expected that parents will give prior notice, by phone or note, when possible.  All absences must have a written note from parents.  You must be at all performances at least one half - hour before the performance begins.  Students will travel by bus to all performances and activities off the RHS campus when such arrangements have been made.  All possible care will be given when taking roll at performance, and the roll taken at the performance will be the official attendance record.  Students should make an effort to be sure they have been accounted for, i.e. being in your proper place during attendance, and checking in when tardy.

Grading scale for class is:

92-100%    A                72-78%    C

88-92%    B+                70-72%    C-

82-88%    B                  68-70%    D+

80-82%    B-                 60-68%    D

78-80%    C+                  0-60%    F

  Make up work

Only activities in class (test, challenges) can be made up-- points for performances cannot.  The director and the student will agree upon when the work will be made up.  All make up work must be done within 2 days plus the length of time of the absence (i.e. gone two days = 4 days makeup period).

Students are responsible for scheduling make up work.  Students with unexcused absences will not receive credit for make up work.

  Performances

You will receive a list of most of the performances for the school year.  You should give a copy of this list to your parents or guardian and your employer, if you have a job.  "Having to work" will not be generally accepted excuse for absences.  Other performances may be added to the calendar, and proper advance notice wil be given when this is done.  Students are responsible for informing parents/guardians/employers when these are made.  Missed performances will affect the student's grade.

There will be occasions where you miss other classes for band activities.  You must keep up in your other classes so that your grades will not be affected by your absence due to band.  This also means you must keep good attendance in all of your classes.  If you cannot attend a band activity due to a concern for another class's grade, your grade in band will reflect your absence.

  Preparation for class

Students are expected to be prepared on the music in their folder, and to practice any additional assignments given.  Work should be done early in the concert cycle - not right before the performance.  It is recommended that practice time is done regularly and is at least 75 minutes a week, more for students preparing for lessons, solos, or are lead players in the band.  Students showing a lack of preparation will be given detentions to spend practicing in the band room, and their grade will be affected.

  Rehearsal Expectations

Respect and care will be shown to all people and equipment.  No food, beverage, or gum is allowed in any of the music rooms, including the practice rooms.  (Exceptions by director's permission.)  Students will follow proper rehearsal proceedures, including being quiet during rehearsal and coming prepared with materials and music ready.

  Tardies

All students will be expected to be in the room when the bell rings, and in your seat, prepared to play two minutes after the bell.  The following policy will be observed:

1st tardy:  verbal warning from teacher

2nd tardy:  detention

3rd tardy:  detention and parent contact

Each succeeding tardy:  referral to appropriate administrator
